Flootech MBBR

One of the significant benefits of FlooBed® MBBR technology for industrial wastewater treatment is that it can be designed for partial or full removal of organics. This is particularly favourable in trade waste or sewer discharge applications where discharge limits for BOD cannot be achieved by primary treatment alone.

What is a FlooBed® MBBR?

A FlooBed® MBBR is one of several types of aerobic biological wastewater treatment process that uses bacteria to consume organic matter in the presence of oxygen.

The main difference between the FlooBed® MBBR and other conventional processes is that is uses small plastic carrier elements in the biological aeration vessel to provide a high surface area for bacteria to attach to and grow.

These carrier elements allow a very high concentration of biomass to be present in the bioreactor which effectively increases its biological treatment capacity. This allows greater volumes of wastewater to be treated in considerably smaller vessels.

Why choose the Hydroflux FlooBed® MBBR over conventional biological processes?

A Hydroflux FlooBed® MBBR is very easy to operate because it is very tolerant to peaks of organic load and variations in flow rate. It also tolerates temperature variations and toxins in the feed water. This make is a perfect solution for Industrial wastewater.

The reactor volume needed for a FlooBed® MBBR system is considerably smaller compared to activated sludge plants. Space requirement is typically 10-40% of conventional solutions.

The FlooBed® MBBR carrier has an open structure, which facilitates a high amount of biomass and improves mass transfer efficiency. The durable structure of the carriers makes them tolerant to mechanical abrasion, resulting in very low maintenance costs.

The filling ratio of carriers can be adjusted on a case by case basis. In practice, this means the process is designed to be very flexible. which is ideal for industry where production changes often result in variations to wastewater quality and flows.

Carrier design is a science

The unique and patented carrier design is one of the keys to the successful operation of the Hydroflux FlooBed® MBBR.

Our carriers are designed with a specific shape, opening and surface area based on many years of experience. It is this openness and shape has been instrumental in maximising biofilm mass transfer and preventing clogging.

Over the years we have developed many different Biofilm carriers for different applications and since 1997 over 40 reference sites have been completed around the world and are operating successfully with our carriers.

The FlooBed® Carrier438 range is designed especially for pulp & paper industry while the FlooBed® Carrier127 range has an optimised structure designed for highly variable food processing wastewater.

All of our carriers are manufactured primarily from recycled PE and injection molded to provide a hard and durable biofilm carrier.

High quality and efficient aeration grids that utilise the entire tank surface area

Process oxygenation and mixing is performed by an advanced aeration system installed in the bottom of the FlooBed® MBBR aeration basin. The aeration system covers the entire bottom area allowing the most efficient use of the capacity and surface area.

Hydroflux FlooBed® MBBR has two designs for aeration using either perforated stainless steel or plastic diffusers. In every case, aeration systems are designed specifically to suit the aeration basin profile and effluent type.

Our aeration system is non-clogging and a practically service free system with a high degree of prefabrication thus providing excellent quality and significantly shortening the onsite installation time.

Is your existing wastewater treatment plant undersized for your current operations?

Does your biological process suffer from shock loads or poor settlement of biomass?

If you answer yes to either of these questions, then upgrading your biological plant with a Hydroflux FlooBed® MBBR may be a suitable solution.

Converting activated sludge processes or SBR’s to a Hydroflux FlooBed® MBBR system can allow treatment of up to 50% more wastewater without incurring any significant additional space, improve the performance and fix poor sedimentation problems.

Some of the common design criteria of the Hydroflux FlooBed® MBBR are as follows.

Design Parameters Details
Retention time typically 1 to 6 hours. The retention time is primarily a consequence of the design load range.
Load range 1 to 20 kg BOD/m³ d-1. The load depends on the required quality of the wastewater and the inlet concentrations. Lower loads are used for full conversion and nutrient removal for open water discharge. Even higher values can be used for BOD polishing for discharge to sewer.
Temperature range + 5 to 45 °C
Biomass concentration in reactor 4 to 12 kg VSS/m³ Typically 70 – 80% of total biomass is attached on the carriers
Sludge circulation rate 0 to 15% of the inlet flow depending on the performance requirements and nutrient removal

Design criteria varies in all applications and depends on the raw wastewater characteristics and the desired treated wastewater quality.

There are numerous applications for a FlooBed® MBBR technology across the industrial sector including:

  • Meat Industry
  • Poultry Industry
  • Dairy Industry
  • Beverage Industry
  • General food Processing
  • Manufacturing
  • Pulp and Paper Industry
  • Petrochemical Industry
  • Environmental Water Treatment

DESIGN CONSTRUCTION OPERATION

Engaging a professional wastewater treatment company to look after the entire wastewater project is a convenient, economical and hassle free option for industry.

Hydroflux Industrial can provide all process design works, manufacture and fabrication, construction and even complete operation of your wastewater treatment plant.

When Hydroflux Industrial provides complete solutions, we can either undertake a contract on a turnkey basis or work together with building services engineers and other construction professionals to ensure that the project is delivered smoothly, without interruption and on time.

BUILD OPERATE TRANSFER (BOT) FINANCING

The Hydroflux Group is able to offer a Build Operate & Transfer (BOT) option for water and wastewater assets in Australia and New Zealand. This innovative partnership arrangement strengthens existing strong bonds between Hydroflux and their customers for the long term.

Hydroflux, represented by a special purpose vehicle dedicated to the project, supplies the design, construction, financing, and operation of the water or wastewater plant. The plant is transferred to the client at the end of the contract, which is generally around 10 years.

Hydroflux also purchase existing water and wastewater plants on a similar basis, which releases cash to our clients for either returning or distributing to investors or for funding other investments in their core business.

The multidisciplinary structure of the Hydroflux group including design, construction, equipment supply and operation makes Hydroflux the ideal BOT water and wastewater partner.

Please contact Hydroflux if would like to explore the option of either acquiring a new water or wastewater facility without capital outlay or would like to free up cash by selling your existing water or wastewater assets.
